Last Week at the Beach

I went to the beach last week with my friends. Parking the car took a long time because the beach was very crowded. Once we got a parking spot we walked on the boardwalk. The sun was very hot. The sand was very hot to walk on. I brought a towel and a chair to sit on and a book to read. When we got too hot we went for a swim. I like going to the ocean because there are big waves and it is fun to dive under the waves when swimming. There was a lifeguard at the beach so we didn't have to worry about the riptide. Many surfers were on their surfboards in the water, waiting to ride a wave. After we swam we went beach combing. We found lots of shells and rocks. Some people were fishing and caught small fish. We also saw a few crabs and seagulls at the beach. Then we played beach volleyball. We played for so long we forgot to put on sunscreen. We all went home with a sunburn

At the Airport

I really enjoy  traveling, but going on an airplane can be scary!  The thing I like least about traveling is the airport. At the airport you must first check in and get your boarding pass.  If you have bags, they must be checked onto the correct flight. Then you walk through security to get to the gate that your plane will be leaving from.  Airport security is an important thing in all countries, but it takes time. You must show your boarding pass and a passport or ID to a security officer. You need a passport if you are on an international flight to another country. The security uses a conveyor belt to view your personal bags and looks at them using special cameras and videos.  The airport security officers will ask you to walk through a metal detector to be sure that you do not have any items that can harm yourself or others on the flight.  Once you get to your gate you must wait until they call your row number to board the flight. Some flights take longer than others, but you are on your way to a great vacation!

Vocabulary Review:
1. Airport: A station where airplanes land and take-off.

 2. Boarding Pass: A ticket used to show a airplane seat.

 3. Conveyor belt: A machine that moves objects from spot to another.

 4.  Metal detector: A security machine that shows concealed metal objects either on a person on in luggage.

5. Passport- identification card used when traveling into different countries.

6. Check-in- to greet an agent and receive boarding pass.

7. Boarding pass- plane ticket.

8. Check- To check a bag means that the airline will take the bag and place it on the plane for you.

Buying a Home

Read the story about being a co-signer on a home below. Use your vocabulary worksheet to help you.

The other day I got a call from my brother, Bob.  He said he was looking around town and he found an old home that he is looking to purchase. It is a real fixer upper. He contacted me because he won’t get credit approval by himself. He has bad credit. He wanted me to be his co-signer.

Bob was not thinking about living in the house. He wanted to buy it to fix it up and to then sell it. The goal would be to flip the house for a large profit. After working in construction for a few summers in the past, Bob is good at that kind of thing.
I thought about it for a moment and I agreed to be his co-signer, if I could see the house first to make sure it was a good idea. That next day we drove over to the house to take a look. Right away I was impressed. The house was on a large lot. There were good views and plenty of privacy from neighbors.  The house was definitely run down, but Bob explained to me everything that he would do to fix it up and make it look nice.

The seller wasn’t requiring a down payment and the monthly mortgage wasn’t too bad.   I agreed to co-sign on the mortgage.

The repairs went well and we had the house looking good in a few months. By the time we were done the house genuinely had curb appeal. Now, all we needed was a buyer. We contacted a realtor and we started the whole process of selling a house.

Answer the questions about the reading in the Comments box below!

1. What does it mean to flip a house?

2. Why did Bob want to buy a fixer upper?

3. What is good about the house when Bob buys it?

Sick with the Flu

Going to the doctor is not always fun. Sometimes when I go to the doctor it is for a check-up. Most of the time, if I am at the doctor, it is because I am sick. I hate getting sick,  but it happens at least once a year. Last year I had the flu. I had a fever and the chills. I went to the doctor and she told me to stay home from work and rest. She also said I should drink a lot of fluids. The doctor gave me a prescription for some medicine. I went to the pharmacy and filled the prescription. When I got home I took the medication and followed the dosage instructions carefully. Thirty minutes later I was itchy all over and covered in red marks on my skin! My face was itchy, my ears were itchy, even my stomach was itchy! It was terrible. I called the doctor and she said, "Stop taking that medication! You are having an allergic reaction!" I discontinued the medicine and eventually  got over the flu, but it was not fun to be sick and itchy! Now I know that I cannot take that medication and I should write it down on all my medical history forms

Answer the questions in the comments box.

1. What is an allergic reaction?

2. Have you ever had an allergic reaction? What happened?

3. What is another word for the chills?

4. Have you ever been sick with the flu? How did you feel? What did you do?
